Patient expectations are a critical step when initiating therapy for acne.¹

Realistic expectations and timelines for improvement will encourage patient compliance.¹

Some facts you should know about what to expect from acne treatment

The management of acne should start with clarifying the following realistic treatment expectations:2

  • The improvement of lesions may be delayed, and the primary objective of therapy is to resolve existing lesions and prevent the formation of new ones.2
  • At least 2-3 months of treatment compliance are needed to assess the efficacy of the treatment.2
  • Long-term maintenance therapy is often necessary because most acne therapies are considered suppressive and not curative. The regular use of a topical retinoid can best achieve this.2
  • Responses to a treatment may vary from patient to patient. Therefore, it may be necessary to make adjustments to the treatment regimen to optimize both the tolerability and efficacy of the treatment.2
  • Tailoring acne treatment should indeed take into consideration the severity of the acne.2

Remember that successful treatment can make you feel better about yourself and – if started early enough – perhaps prevent scarring too.3
