Around 47% of acne patients suffered from acne scars1

How does acne cause scars?4

Acne scars are the result of inflammation of acne blemishes. The acne pore swells and a breakdown occurs in the wall of the pore. Some acne blemishes are small and the scars created are shallow and heal quickly.

Sometimes the contents of blemishes spill into the surrounding tissue and cause deeper scars. The skin’s response is to repair the scar by forming new collagen fibers.4

These scars come in different shapes and sizes.

The following describes the different types of acne scars that develop.⁵

DEPRESSED ACNE SCARS5

When acne clears, your skin heals by making collagen. If your skin makes too little collagen to fill the area where the acne was, a depressed scar appears. Most people who get acne scars develop depressed acne scars and often develop more than one.

RAISED ACNE SCARS5

If your skin makes too much collagen when healing after a breakout, you develop raised scars. This type of acne scar is more common in people who have darker skin tones.

Scarring can be a source of anxiety. These Psychological effects may arise either from the visible appearance of the affected skin during an acne flare-up or from the resulting disfiguring scars.6 The longer acne lasts, the more likely it is to affect ones emotions. However, remember that early treatment can prevent these problems. Some treatments nearly remove the scars while others help the skin heal itself using its own collagen.7
