Some makeup, along with many skin and hair care products, contains oil or other ingredients that can cause acne breakouts.1

Why some hair care products cause breakouts?²

When hair care products contain oil, the oil can find its way to your skin. Once this happens, the oil can clog your pores. These clogged pores can lead to acne. When hair care products are the culprit, you ’ll likely get whiteheads and tiny flesh-colored bumps called “papules.” These can appear along your hairline, forehead, or the back of your neck.

When you stop using the product clogging your pores, the acne will slowly clear. Be sure to wash everything your head touched, including pillow cases and sheets, Hats and Headbands.

Make-up products and Acne

Some cosmetics can cause acne. This is called acne cosmetica. Even women who would not otherwise have acne can develop acne cosmetica when wearing makeup. If you have tiny breakouts around your lips, your lipstick or lip balm could be the culprit.

Acne cosmetica can take time to appear. This delay can make it difficult to see a connection between acne and the makeup
causing it. Women may treat the acne and then cover it with acne-causing makeup. Continuing to use the makeup leads to a never-ending cycle of breakouts.3

Here’s what dermatologists recommend:3

  • Women who suffer from acne can wear makeup, but they should choose it carefully. They should be sure to choose products with the following terms on their labels: Oil-free, won’t clog pores, or non-comedogenic.
  • Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser.
  • Remove your makeup, including eye makeup, before going to bed.
  • Apply makeup with gentle strokes to avoid irritating your skin.
  • Clean your makeup brushes every week and make sure you’re the only one using them.
  • If you want to wear makeup while using acne medication, apply the acne medication first.
